Change To Security Laws for Maryland
Although we deal mostly with PA, you need to keep in mind that we have vendors, etc., that may be in the state of Maryland. Currently, security laws in the U.S. are being enacted by state and there is no overriding authority. This is going to create all kinds of issues for businesses in the future. The best we can do is try and keep up and have “some” familiarity with what is going on.
Maryland security breach laws have expanded to include: passport numbers, health insurance policy numbers, fingerprints/ retina scans or other biometric data, any mental or physical health information (generally anything covered by HIPAA), usernames/passwords that give access to a person’s e-mail address. The last one could potentially mean that we can no longer use Email addresses for user names or even compile them into lists.
