Keeping WordPress Up to Date

Before you upgrade to the latest WordPress version, follow our checklist below to ensure the easiest, quickest and most efficient transition.

  • Update PHP Version
PHP is the most popular scripting languages used on the internet.  A survey by W3Techs, states that PHP is used by approximately 79% of websites who use a server-side programming language. PHP powers WordPress in addition to the themes and plugins available in WordPress.  Using an outdated PHP version can cause performance issues resulting in poor user experience.  By upgrading to the latest PHP version, you can eliminate performance issues, increase the speed of your site and ensure you are utilizing the most secure version available.
  • Update Plugins
While updating your plugins is always a good practice, it is essential to do so as many plugin authors release new versions to improve plugin performance or patch security issues.  Ensuring your plugins are updated first will provide you with a more bug-free upgrade path.
  • Create a Back-Up
It is recommended that you backup your WordPress site regularly.  However, it is imperative to do so before upgrading to a new WordPress version.  Your WordPress database stores everything on your website. If your database was to get erased or become corrupted, you could potentially lose everything.  However, having a backup copy of your site can reduce the loss from this type of disaster.

CourseVector Hosting

Unsure of where to start?  With CourseVector’s hosting services we take care of this (and MORE!) for you automatically.  Our affordable web hosting packages offer uptime reliability with excellent customer service and technical support.  At this time, CourseVector is not recommending our customers upgrade to Gutenberg yet–we have found this new update to be extremely slow and buggy.  Additionally, some plugins have not updated to accommodate the latest WordPress version, and Gutenberg can interfere with themes that use builders.  For more information or to start taking advantage of CourseVector’s hosting benefits contact us today!
