Office DDE Malware Attack

There is a function in Office that connects documents to fields outside of the document you may be working on. For instance, if you open a Word document from someone and it wants to reference a photo, etc., it may pop up a screen asking you if it is OK. There is now malware that cannot be detected by virus scanners that can lock the files on your computer and the network. The malware is activated by clicking on an Office warning message. Currently, the message would appear as follows:

At this point, our suggestion is that if you get a popup in office that looks “like” the above, asks you for permission to do something, or gives you a warning, it is best to take a screenshot and forward that to the IT department BEFORE YOU PERMIT OFFICE TO ACCESS THE FILE, PICTURE, ETC.
