How to Detect a Copyright Infringement Scams

You’re probably wondering how it’s possible to know you’re being scammed, and one of the major giveaways is if you’ve never used copyrighted images in your article.

Scammers rely on deception, often trying to get you to doubt yourself, which is what they prey on. Scammers may have a last name, claim to be a licensed illustrator, and provide unverified links that download files.

Another thing to keep in mind is a deadline, which is what scammers use to try and create a sense of urgency without giving you time to think things through.

If you were actually dealing with a legal threat, the accuser would contact you directly instead of through a comment on your website or article.
You do not have to worry about copyright infringement as long as you rely on your own images, purchased images, or those with a creative commons license. If you are working with a reputable design firm, copyright infringement should never be an issue.

What do Scammers Hope to Achieve?

Scammers have a few goals in mind when they’re trying to scam unsuspecting victims, which are to either download malware on your computer or lead you to a phishing page where you will be prompted to give your personal details.

Many of these copyright infringement scams are completely automated, and it is relatively easy to tell you are not dealing with a real person.

What if it’s Not a Scam?

If you’re guilty of using copyright images without the owner’s permission, you can simply remove the image and find alternatives that are free to use.  It is usually enough to just remove the copyright content and no further action should be needed.
