Email is a favorite way for hackers and scammers to target victims. Some scammers zip viruses, spoof email address, and send them to unsuspecting recipients with a password to open. Once you type in that password, the zip file auto runs, and can download potentially harmful software to your computer.
If you want to double-check that there is a real person on the other end of the file, we recommend calling the person to verify before opening the attachment. Do not reply to the email as verification. A malicious party will most definitely try to assure you that the email is safe.
