Think Before You Scan: QR Code Scams on the Rise
QR codes are everywhere, from menus to flyers, from parking meters to official notices. They make it easy to access websites or make payments without typing long URLs. Unfortunately, scammers have figured that out too.
How the Scam Works
Criminals are replacing legitimate QR codes with fake stickers that redirect to malicious websites. The code looks normal, but when you scan it, it can:
- Take you to a phishing site that mimics a trusted brand or payment portal.
- Prompt you to enter personal or financial information.
- Attempt to download malware onto your phone.
Because these fake codes often appear in public places they can be difficult to spot until it’s too late.

How to Protect Yourself
Before you scan, take a second look:
- Report suspicious codes to the business or organization where you found them.
- Inspect the code. If it looks like a sticker or is placed over another QR code, don’t scan it.
- Check the URL. Most phones preview the web address before opening it; make sure it looks legitimate.
- Avoid logging in through a QR code unless you’re sure it’s from a trusted source.
