There are many different types of email scams floating around the internet. Scammers have to be trickier and users need to be smarter to avoid falling victim to the ever-growing list of email scams bombarding our inboxes. While the “Package Undeliverable” Scam is the #1 clickable scam right now, here are the top 5 clickable email scam subject lines*.
- “Delivery attempt failed” or “Package Underliverable” scam – This email scam tries to get a user to click on a link in the email to reschedule or pick up a package that was not delivered to their home.
- “Email Undeliverable” – Similar to the above, this scam tries to get users to click through to email support.
- “Employee Survey” – It is very easy to make it look like an email is coming from someone you know. Scammers will spoof your company’s email address for scams three, four, and five. For this scam, they make it look like your employer is trying to collect data about the place you work.
- “Handbook Changes” – For this scam, they make it look like your employer has changed an important aspect of company policy.
- “Evacuation Plan Change” – For this scam, they make it look like your employer has changed the emergency evacuation route for the building.
As it stands, we are getting smarter. Where we once fell for scams that promised free offers from big companies, data shows that fewer and fewer people will open an email with that type of subject line.
Keep yourself safe. Don’t click links from emails that you feel are suspicious, even if they appear to come from someone you know. If you get an email from your employer about a company policy change with a link therein, it might be best to contact HR directly via a separate email or phone call. Do not reply to the suspicious email.
