Backups and updates are an essential part of website security. For this reason, CourseVector strongly recommends our clients choose Managed Hosting. We get a lot of questions about Managed WordPress Hosting, so we’ve put together a list of the most frequently asked questions to help clarify this hosting plan.

What is covered with managed hosting?

For $189 per year, managed hosting includes all of the features of our basic hosting package and includes:

  • Server Control Panel(cPanel)
  • Server Firewall: Our first layer of security (prevents brute force attacks)
  • Web Application Firewall: Our second layer of security (reviews every web request for suspicious activity)
  • 4GB Storage: We also offer 10GB, 25GB, or more
  • 100 Email Addresses: Adjustable on request
  • Web accessible email
  • Email Forwarding
  • Courtesy cPanel Backup: No guarantees or warranties
  • WordPress Install
  • Automatic WordPress Backup/Restore
  • htaccess Hardened Logon
  • htaccess Directory Security Permissions
  • Security Plugins
  • Caching Plugin
  • Periodic Security, WordPress, Plugin review and updates, approximately every six months, but a qualified WordPress Technician. An additional, manual, archival backup is also done at this time.

What happens if I install/update a plugin that breaks the site?

It is our recommendation that clients allow CourseVector technicians to update or install plugins on their website. But we know that there are instances where clients install plugins on their own. These plugins are not covered under our Managed Hosting agreement. If an update or plugin not installed by CV breaks a website, the client will need to pay for a technician to fix the site. We do make periodic backups of all managed hosting client sites. However, the addition of client-installed plugins could complicate the restoration process.

Should your site break during a managed update, no matter the cause, CV technicians will restore a copy of the site from a backup and notify the client immediately.

What happens if CourseVector installs/updates a plugin that breaks the site?

CourseVector carefully selects a handful of plugins to enhance the user experience or safety of a website. Just like any other update or upgrade, our plugins can cause issues. If it’s our fault, we fix it free of charge. It is our policy to restore your site with a backup promptly, research the issue, and suggest and/or implement a fix as soon as possible.

What if I need more than your standard managed hosting?

What happens if you need additional services such as more storage or more bandwidth? You can upgrade your hosting plan to increase bandwidth or storage while keeping the ease of our managed updates and backups. We also offer customized hosting plans. Why does WordPress need to be updated?

Hackers take advantage of vulnerabilities. So, in addition to user experience upgrades, it is very important to update WordPress periodically because of security, new features, speed, bug fixes, and compatibility. Security is the most important reason to keep WordPress updated. Vulnerabilities get reported to WordPress and the WordPress team is hard at work to fix them. These fixes are released as WordPress updates. Because WordPress is constantly updating, plugin and theme developers must keep up with updates. Developers often plan their updates with core WordPress updates allowing them to take advantage of new features making the plugins and/or theme compatible.

Why do I need backups?

Anything from human error to a hacker attack to mechanical failure can cause a website to break. Because of this, it is important that someone create and keep backups of your website. The short time, effort, and cost involved in making and storing a backup far exceeds the amount of aggravation you’ll experience starting from scratch.

Am I protected from hacking, malware infections, etc.?

To a degree. Our managed hosting clients do enjoy some enhanced security features. If the site is compromised and that compromise was not caused by you or one of your users, then CourseVector will restore or repair the site at no charge. This warranty only covers users, passwords, plugins, themes and changes done by CourseVector.
